Guidance, Research and Reports

Trans-Inclusive Culture: Guidance on advancing trans inclusion for museums, galleries, archives and heritage organisations has been developed by University of Leicester’s Research Centre for Museums and Galleries (RCMG) – working with a team of legal scholars and experts in inclusion, equality and ethics – has developed comprehensive guidance on advancing trans inclusion for museums, galleries, archives and heritage organisations. The guidance is supported by the Economic and Social Research Council.

The guidance, intended primarily for anyone working with or in museums, galleries, archives and heritage, sets out an ethical framework to support cultural organisations to advance trans inclusion. It explains key components of UK law, as well as some of the limitations and complexities of the law. Download the Trans-Inclusive Culture Guidance.

Seven Principles to Ensure an Inclusive Recovery has been developed by We Shall Not Be Removed in partnership with Ramps on the Moon, Attitude is Everything, Paraorchestra, and What Next? to create a new guide for the arts and entertainment sectors to support disability inclusion.  Their Seven Inclusive Principles for Arts & Cultural Organisations working safely through Covid-19 is designed to complement the suite of guidance documents already issued by UK Governments and sector support organisations. Power and Privilege in the 21st Century Museum is a Museums Association (MA) report highlighting the challenges to inclusion within the sector, while seeking to provide practical tools and insights on how to transform museums and make space for multiple perspectives.  Download the full report here

Research Report Published on Inclusion and Diversity in Volunteering, Dr Helen Timbrell has undertaken a comparative study of the experiences of People of Colour (POC) and White volunteers in four organisations: English Heritage, Citizens Advice, Macmillan and Team London.  The research explores the experiences of volunteers through one to one interviews.  The report titled “What the bloody hell are you doing here” shares a range of findings in relation to organisational cultures, behaviours and practices and makes recommendations for how to improve practice to ensure the volunteer experience is genuinely inclusive.

We Shall Not Be Removed 2021 Survey Report The UK Disability Arts Alliance marked its the first anniversary of the campaign by revealing the findings of a new survey that highlights significant threats to the continued participation of creative deaf, disabled and neurodiverse people in the cultural sector.

Toolkits

MA has published Communication Decolonisation Guidance to help you and your organisation talk about your work. This guidance is meant to be a starting point for building a robust communication strategy to support your work. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach because across the museum sector there is a diversity of capacity, size, and tactics.

Empire, Slavery & Scotland’s Museums project includes resources on Diversifying The Workforce that look at anti-racist recruitment, training, and programmes for diversifying the museum and gallery workforce.

AIM have introduced their Tackling Inequalities Hallmark

Inc Arts has launched a programme to support anti-racist work in the cultural sector. The Unlock toolkit is a free resource aimed at museums and galleries as well as theatre, dance, music, festival and combined arts organisations.
